چکیده

Automated recognition of facial expression is an important addition to computer vision research because of its relevance to the study of psychological phenomena and the development of human-computer interaction (HCI). We developed a computer vision system that automatically recognizes individual action units or action unit combinations in the upper face using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). Our approach to facial expression recognition is based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), which separates expressions into upper and lower face action. In this paper, we use three approaches to extract facial expression information: (1) facial feature point tracking, (2) dense flow tracking with principal component analysis (PCA), and (3) high gradient component detection (i.e., furrow detection). The recognition results of the upper face expressions using feature point tracking, dense flow tracking, and high gradient component detection are 85%, 93%, and 85%,

Recognizing Upper Face Action Units for Facial Expression Analysis

We develop an automatic system to analyze subtle changes in upper face expressions based on both permanent facial features (brows, eyes, mouth) and transient facial features (deepening of facial furrows) in a nearly frontal image sequence. Our system recognizes fine-grained changes in facial expression based on Facial Action Coding System (FACS) action units (AUs). Multi-state facial component ...

A Comparative Analysis of Thermal and Visual Modalities for Automated Facial Expression Recognition

Facial expressions are formed through complicated muscular actions and can be taxonomized using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). FACS breaks down human facial expressions into discreet action units (AUs) and often combines them together to form more elaborate expressions. In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of performance of automated facial expression recognition from therm...

Automated Facial Expression Analysis

Human Emotion Recognition Clips Utilised Expert System was designed to recognise and interpret facial expressions of the observed person in an automatic way [1]. Still, input to HERCULES has been manually supplied. Through integrating HERCULES into the Integrated System for Facial Expression Recognition (ISFER) a complete process of automatic analysis of facial expressions has been achieved [2]...

Measuring the intensity of spontaneous facial action units with dynamic Bayesian network

Automatic facial expression analysis has received great attention in different applications over the last two decades. Facial Action Coding System (FACS), which describes all possible facial expressions based on a set of facial muscle movements called Action Unit (AU), has been used extensively to model and analyze facial expressions. FACS describes methods for coding the intensity of AUs, and ...

Fully Automatic Upper Facial Action Recognition

This paper provides a new fully automatic framework to analyze facial action units, the fundamental building blocks of facial expression enumerated in Paul Ekman’s Facial Action Coding System (FACS). The action units examined in this paper include upper facial muscle movements such as inner eyebrow raise, eye widening, and so forth, which combine to form facial expressions. Although prior metho...
